WAYSTED

WAYSTED - THE HARSH REALITY

It was in 1983 that Pete Way, the backbone of legendary rockers UFO, got together with Scottish vocalist Fin to form WAYSTED - a band which combined powerful guitarwork with Fin's distinctive gravel-soaked-in-whisky vocals, and also had an endearing close-to-the-edge appeal which any project Pete Way is involved with automatically guarantees! Indeed, Pete Way is credited as the first to turn bass playing into a 'performance' rather than just a part of the rhythm section. Steve Harris of Iron Maiden calls Way his 'inspiration' - and Joe Elliott (Def Leppard) and Ozzy Osbourne both cite him as the ultimate rock’n’roller saying that he taught them all they know about rock!

WAYSTED went on to put out three influential albums - Vices, the self-titled Waysted (mini-album) and The Good, The Bad, The Waysted - before Fin left in '85. The band has featured many musicians in its ranks including ex-UFO's Paul Chapman, Motorhead drummer ‘Philthy’ Phil Taylor, Humble Pie’s Jerry Shirley - and Danny Vaughn (Tyketto) who sang on the Save Your Prayers album.

One of Fin’s projects in the subsequent years was supplying the voice for the multi-award winning BBC TV show ‘The Office’ (Handbags & Gladrags), which played a big part in getting the ‘Dynamic Duo’ back together again. The new album ‘The Harsh Reality’ features a stunning new version of that song.

Pete continued to play with UFO, but the fans always kept a flame burning for the return of the high-energy rock’n’roll, which WAYSTED did, and still do, so well! In the summer of 2003 Fin and Pete met up again in Ohio and the next chapter of the saga began. Back in the UK, they recruited the remarkable Chris George who was voted Young Guitarist of The Year by Guitar Magazine at the tender age of 16. Chris has played in Greg Ridley's Humble Pie and is also Marshall Amps main man when it comes to demo-ing their gear around the world. Then aged 23, Chris was playing with a maturity that many of his elders could only dream of matching - yet he had an energy and excitement that was completely at home with the vibe of the band. On drums was another part of the Marshall family - Paul R.D. Haslin - whose no-nonsense thundering approach to the skins fitted perfectly too.

This return to active duty was marked by the explosive and exciting, hard rocking and joyous Back From The Dead, which received excellent reviews including a 4-star review in Classic Rock Magazine, reaching No. 27 in their Album Of The Year charts for 2005.

WAYSTED's live set is fast-moving and fuelled with attitude, and the amazing welcome they received the night they truly came 'Back from the Dead' at London's Mean Fiddler on February 18th 2005 is an indictment of how well-loved these crazy rock’n’rollers are. That show was captured on an ‘unofficial’ bootleg, ‘Boot From The Dead’. Later in 2006 they released an official live album, ‘Organised Chaos’, recorded at The Barfly in Glasgow.

Now we have the new album ‘The Harsh Reality’, recorded at Trinity Heights in Newcastle during August 2007. Insp. Fred Purser (Tygers of Pan Tang, Tom Jones) was recommended to the band as a producer, and as it turned out they couldn’t have hand-picked a better man for the job. He has captured WAYSTED at their very best, from the opening driving riff of Propaganda, through the sure-fire classic Long Time Dead, to the heartfelt Song For Steve. The band has never sounded better. This is British Hard Drivin’ Rock at its BEST!!!

‘The Harsh Reality’ features 10 new original songs and the aforementioned beefed-up Handbags & Gladrags. Also included is Waysted World (The Theme Park) which portrays the band's humour and will become a collector's item in time. Mark my words!!!!!

The band will be touring extensively in 2008, and with a few festivals already confirmed, Waysted World will be coming to a town near you soon. With this, the definitive line-up of Pete Way, Fin, Chris George, Paul R.D. Haslin - and now with Nacho Jase on rhythm guitar - WAYSTED can promise you Heaven Tonight - every night!

THE WAYSTED WE WERE

In 1982 PETE WAY undocked from the UFO mother-ship and launched FASTWAY with MOTÖRHEAD's Eddie Clarke. Before this project was fully off the ground Pete took off yet again, with OZZY OSBOURNE. After a relatively safe landing, Pete formed WAYSTED with ex-HEARTBREAKERS guitarist RONNIE KAYFIELD, and UFO's PAUL RAYMOND on keyboards. Vocals were provided by Scotland's finest - FIN (ex FLYING SQUAD) - and occupying the drum-stool was ex-STAMPEDE, WILD HORSES and DEF LEPPARD drummer FRANK NOON.

Signed to Chrysalis Records they brought out their debut album 'Vices', which was produced by MICK GLOSSOP who had also produced UFO's 'Making Contact'. Vices was full of powerful guitarwork and was dominated by Fin's gravel-soaked-in-whisky vocals. Guitarist BARRY BENNEDETTA was added to the line-up in time for their American dates in support of MÖTLEY CRÜE and OZZY OSBOURNE. This was an incompatible marriage, and both Bennedetta and Kayfield were soon out. Raymond was the next to go, prior to the 1984 tour with DIO, and by the end of this tour WAYSTED was down to its foundations - just Pete and Fin remained.

Frank Noon was briefly replaced by ex-ANGELIC UPSTARTS drummer DECCA WADE, and NEIL SHEPARD (previously with the JESS COX BAND) took up guitar duties. By late 1984 Pete had talked UFO drummer ANDY PARKER into joining the band, and also brought PAUL CHAPMAN in from UFO to help teach Neil Shepard how to play the UFO classics. Chapman stayed, and after the 'Waysted' EP was recorded in 1984, Shepard was the one to leave.

WAYSTED went on to open for IRON MAIDEN on their UK tour, after which ex-MOTÖRHEAD drummer PHILTHY PHIL TAYLOR replaced Andy Parker. Taylor then left, to be replaced by ex-HUMBLE PIE and FASTWAY drummer JERRY SHIRLEY. The next album - 'The Good, The Bad, The Waysted' was produced by TEN YEARS AFTER's LEO LYONS, who had also produced UFO's classic albums from the 70s. Keyboard-player JIMMY DE LILLA, who had been in Chapman's D.O.A., was also brought in. But then in late 1985, Fin left - and DANNY VAUGHN, the singer from CIRCUS CIRCUS was recruited to take Fin's place, along with ex-WORLD WAR III drummer JOHNNY 'DEE' DiTEODORA

This line up, under the management of WILF WRIGHT (who had previously looked after UFO) signed to Capitol Records, and 'Save Your Prayers' was the result, which included the single 'Black And Blue'. SIMON HANHART was the producer of this much gentler album. A tour of Europe followed in support of STATUS QUO, and then in 1987 they toured America with IRON MAIDEN, this time with young American guitarist ERIC GAMENS in tow. There was also a show in Israel with ALVIN LEE and MARILLION. The WAYSTED line up was in its familiar state of flux and Danny Vaughn left to form TYKETTO, whilst Dee joined BRITNY FOX.

By now the Capitol Records deal was out of the window, so Pete Way went into the studio to record some demos with Dee, Eric Gamens, SPIKE from the QUIREBOYS, and MARTIN CHAISSON. Singer JON DEVERILL (ex-TYGERS OF PAN TANG) and keyboard player GED RYLAND also did a brief stint. Gamens and Chaisson went their separate ways, the former joining COLD SWEAT and the latter forming IF ONLY.

In the early 90s, Pete Way found his way home and rejoined UFO, and after the classic reunion album Walk On Water, founded the UFO side-project MOGG/WAY with Phil - releasing 'Edge Of The World' and later 'Chocolate Box', but never totally giving up on the idea of reforming WAYSTED.

'Save Your Prayers' was re-issued along with some demos which had never before seen the light of day. The 'Wilderness Of Mirrors' album which included WAYSTED's interpretation of CREEDANCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL's 'Fortunate Son', and another collection of material under the banner 'Your Prayers Are Saved', kept the WAYSTED pot simmering.

In the summer of 2003 Fin, Paul Chapman and Pete all met up again in Ohio, and the next chapter of the WAYSTED saga began......
